MALAY CULTURE OF TEPUNG TAWAR

MALAY CULTURE OF TEPUNG TAWAR

Here are some key points about the tepung tawar ritual in Malay culture:

  • Tepung tawar refers to the ritual of sprinkling rice flour mixed with water over someone's head during important ceremonies like weddings. It is believed to bring blessings, prosperity and ward off evil spirits.
  • The tepung tawar ceremony is usually conducted by the elder male member of the family. He sprinkles the rice flour mixture on the bride and groom or the person being honored.
  • The rice flour is made into a paste using water from seven different wells or sources. This symbolizes purification. Sometimes leaves from seven different types of plants are added to the paste as well.
  • After sprinkling the tepung tawar, the elder will usually place a palm on the person's head to symbolically pass on the blessings. The person receiving the tepung tawar will then wash it off themselves.
